Trade opportunities, harmful tariffs need addressing
GREEN BAY, Wis. — One of the largest dairy cooperatives in the country, representing farmers throughout the Midwest, praised Congress for its approval of the new farm bill today and pushed for lawmakers and the president to take other important steps to ensure dairy farmers have the best opportunities to succeed.

With approval from the U.S. House of Representatives today, the five-year bill moves to President Trump for signing. The Senate approved the legislation on Tuesday.
The following comments are from Brody Stapel, president of the board of directors for Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, who farms with his family on a dairy in eastern Wisconsin:
“This is a big day for America’s farming community. The historically quick passage of the bill speaks to the importance of agriculture to our country’s elected leaders. We want to commend those in Congress for working together to reach this milestone, and we urge President Trump to sign the bill into law.
“With attention to things like trade, risk management and nutrition, the bill sets the stage for our dairy farmers to succeed in the long term doing what they do best — creating wholesome, affordable food safely and efficiently and keeping this country’s rural communities strong.
“As critical as it is, the farm bill is not the end of the story. This achievement should be a springboard to other improvements that the government can affect, including developing new world markets for dairy products and resolving the tariff retaliation that is severely hurting our dairy community. We need, and expect, leaders to carry the momentum of this bill forward.”
