WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said this after his resolution to recognize the importance of trauma-informed care, Senate Resolution 346, unanimously passed the Senate Tuesday:
“I was happy to sponsor the resolution that just passed unanimously and was championed by Tonette Walker, the first lady of Wisconsin. The resolution acknowledges the importance and effectiveness of trauma-informed care and highlights programs from across the nation, including the Fostering Futures Initiative also spearheaded by Tonette Walker. Because of her efforts, Wisconsinites will be better equipped to support those who have experienced trauma.”
Walker echoed Sen. Johnson’s remarks:
“Declaring May as National Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Month and May 22nd as National Trauma-Informed Care Day brings us one step closer to improving the lives of children and families impacted by toxic stress and trauma,” said first lady Tonette Walker. “Thank you to Senators Johnson (WI) and Heitkamp (ND) for their leadership in passing this resolution. Having a specific month and day to collectively raise our voices nationwide and increase awareness about TIC brings a tremendous boost to our efforts in Wisconsin to become the first fully trauma-informed state in the country. As more and more people learn about the negative impact Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the spread of TIC will be unstoppable. People are growing impatient in just treating symptoms, they want to get to the root of many of our public health problems and trauma-informed care gives us the tools to do just that.”
S.Res.346 was cosponsored by Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Shelly Moore Capito (R-W. Va.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
