Washington DC – Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy, Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing & Insurance, co-introduced legislation called the bipartisan CURD (Codifying Useful Regulatory Definitions) Act (H.R. 4828), which codifies “natural cheese” as a term within federal statute. Defining and differentiating natural cheese will make it clear to American consumers what this means for cheeses and what they can expect when purchasing cheese. The bill would also clarify the specific meaning and narrow the scope of the FDA’s work in defining “natural” as a product composition or purity claim.

“Thanks to hard working dairy farmers in our state, Wisconsin cheese is the best in the world.” said Congressman Duffy. “Both dairy farmers and American consumers deserve certainty and clarity that a definition for ‘natural cheese’ will bring. The FDA’s inaction on this definition has led to confusion for consumers, so it is necessary for Congress to settle the debate.”
