Madison, WI – Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) participated in the final meeting of the legislature’s Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding Reform today. The Commission developed a package of recommendations that will be presented to Governor-Elect Tony Evers and the legislature as the next State Budget is developed.

Marklein offered the following statement:

“After many hours of public hearings, research, outreach and discussion, the Commission designed a thoughtful package of ideas and concepts that offers solutions and alternatives to the legislature as we work on the future of school funding in Wisconsin,” Marklein said. “With 19 diverse members from a wide variety of backgrounds, I am encouraged by the ideas and discussion we generated. While we don’t agree on everything, we were able to design recommendations that we all support.”

“Prior to the final meeting, I reached out to all 34 school districts in the 17th Senate District to seek input on our initial ideas. I appreciate all of the follow-up from school leaders who work in our communities. Several of their contributions were rolled into these recommendations. I am optimistic that we will make positive changes in the next budget.”

Marklein was appointed to the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding Reform in late 2017. The Commission’s first meeting was December 14, 2017. In 2018 the Commission held public hearings throughout the state, discussed ideas and concepts, requested research and information and sought input from stakeholders.

In addition to his work on the Commission, Marklein visits every school district he represents at least once per session and continually communicates with school leaders, faculty, staff and families about educational issues.
