MADISON, WI – Early this morning, State Superintendent Tony Evers was declared the winner of the 2018 gubernatorial election in Wisconsin.

In response, Sierra Club’s Chapter Chair, Don Ferber issued the following statement:

“The Sierra Club congratulates Tony Evers and Mandela Barnes election to Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin.  Their election is a major step towards restoring Wisconsin’s proud tradition of conservation and protection of our irreplaceable air, water, and natural resources.  The resources all Wisconsinites rely on have been damaged by Scott Walker’s repeated catering to polluting special interests.  His administration’s irresponsible and reckless policies finally come to an end with this historic election.

We congratulate Senator Tammy Baldwin on her reelection as she returns to Washington to continue to protect Wisconsin families’ health, air and water and to build a clean energy economy that works for Wisconsin.

The Sierra Club congratulates Oneida County conservation groups Protect The Willow and the Oneida County Clean Waters Action for their grassroots organizing to stop the Oneida County referendum to open sensitive county forest, wetlands, and pristine groundwater to destructive sulfide mining.

Finally, we’d like to thank the more than 100 Sierra Club-endorsed candidates for state and federal offices from Wisconsin who ran outstanding campaigns focused on grassroots engagement and protecting our natural resources.”
