[MILWAUKEE, Wis….] Yet another Democrat is backing Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel. On Monday, Democrat Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schimdt endorsed Schimel, calling him “a principled leader who cares about people, not partisan politics.”
“I am glad Brad Schimel is our Attorney General,” said Schmidt. “His work on combating the opioid epidemic and eliminating the rape kit evidence backlog has been stellar and Wisconsin is better off having him remain on the job as the state’s top cop.”
Thirteen Democrat sheriffs have now publicly endorsed Schimel, along with 51 Republican sheriffs, making a total of 64 of Wisconsin’s 72 sheriffs on record supporting Brad Schimel.
“Brad Schimel is the only candidate for Attorney General with broad, bipartisan support all across Wisconsin,” said Schimel campaign manager Johnny Koremenos. “He’s spent his entire adult life prosecuting cases and earning convictions in Wisconsin. His record can’t be matched and we’re happy that each day more and more people are coming on board in support.”
Schimel faces activist Josh Kaul in the General Election. Whereas Brad Schimel has a nearly three decades long, distinguished career as a prosecutor in this state, Josh Kaul has never prosecuted a criminal case in Wisconsin. Not one, ever. Whereas Schimel has a broad, bipartisan coalition of Wisconsin supporters, Kaul is funded and supported by state and national partisan activists.
Kaul has come under fire for his weak handling of drug dealers. He only has a handful of cases to look at, but in all, he pled out 60 defendants to lighter sentences while working for the federal government in Baltimore. In one case, the leader of an opioid ring was facing a possible life sentence when Kaul agreed to a plea deal that saw her sentenced to only three years.
“Josh Kaul has a weak record in Maryland and has never prosecuted a single case in Wisconsin–not one, ever,” said Koremenos.
As Attorney General, Schimel has also prioritized preventing Internet crimes against children and violence against women. Under Schimel, Wisconsin is a national leader in the fight against human trafficking. Together with a coalition of Attorneys General from across the country, Brad Schimel has led numerous lawsuits challenging overreach by the federal government that would cripple the economy and hurt Wisconsin families.
Brad and his wife, Sandi, raise their two daughters in Waukesha County where Brad previously served as a prosecutor since 1990, including eight years as the elected District Attorney. He was elected Wisconsin Attorney General in 2014.
