Key document signing moves project to construction phase

Madison – Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt is pleased to announce a key development in the Hwy 23 project:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced the signing of Hwy. 23 2018 Limited Scope Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (LS SEIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) today. The ROD allows Hwy. 23 expansion in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties to move from preliminary design to final design and construction.  A 150-day timeframe now begins when legal challenges to the ROD can be mounted.

The project will reconstruct 19.1 miles of Hwy. 23 as a 4-lane, on-alignment divided highway from US 151 in Fond du Lac east to County P in Plymouth. Numerous intersections will also be improved as part of the project. Additionally, Hwy. 23 will be designated as an expressway to preserve future right of way for improvements that could be implemented as needed.

If no further legal challenges are allowed to successfully delay the project, the WisDOT will begin reconstruction next summer in Sheboygan County. According to the planned schedule, the reconstruction would conclude in 2022 when the Fond du Lac County portion of the project is complete.

The 2018 LS SEIS/ROD document will soon available on the Hwy. 23 study project website at http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/projects/by-region/ne/wis23exp/default.aspx

“This is hopefully the end of a legal process that has taken far too long, and negatively impacted the lives and health of constituents within and far beyond the 52nd District.  I respectfully request and encourage that the 1000 Friends of Wisconsin refrain from any further legal action that would interfere with the construction of this vital project.” Representative Thiesfeldt said.
