MADISON- Today, United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Court. In response, Rep. Mark Spreitzer made the following statement:
“Yesterday, we celebrated the anniversary of three monumental Supreme Court decisions (Lawrence v. Texas, United States v. Windsor, and Obergefell v. Hodges) affirming the rights of gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans, including the right to marry. Today, the deciding vote in those cases, Justice Anthony Kennedy, announced his retirement from the Supreme Court.
“The rights of LGBTQ Americans lie squarely in the hands of the next Supreme Court Justice, but also in the hands of voters and elected officials across our country. We need to make sure the next Supreme Court Justice is someone who will uphold the fundamental rights of all Americans.
“I will continue to advocate for the LGBTQ community in Wisconsin, including reintroducing bills to safeguard marriage equality in our state statutes, to delete the ban on marriage in our state constitution, and to expand our nondiscrimination laws to fully protect transgender Wisconsinites.
“This fight will be more important than ever in the days and months to come, with the possibility of a Supreme Court Justice who could overturn what we all know to be true: that the United States Constitution requires people to be treated with dignity and protects the right to marry and raise a family with the people you love, regardless of sexual orientation.”
