GOP strips Governor-Elect & Attorney General-Elect of Powers

MADISON, Wis. – Early this morning, Republicans passed a series of sweeping changes to limit the powers of Governor-Elect Tony Evers and Attorney General-Elect Josh Kaul. This action nullifies the wishes of over a million voters in the Nov. 6 election, in which Republicans saw each statewide constitutional office taken by Democrats. The proposals were made public last Friday and were rammed through the legislative process with little regard to procedure or public opinion. In response, Representative Sondy Pope (D-Mt. Horeb) released the following statement:

“The idea that Republicans would override the will of over a million Wisconsin voters is outrageous. These actions set a terrible precedent for politics in our state and flies in the face of the Republicans’ insincere calls for bi-partisanship. In addition to gerrymandering and voter suppression, the passage of these bills is yet another shameful chapter in the Republicans’ history of subverting the will of the people. Wisconsin deserves better.”

“In spite of these unfortunate events and looming GOP obstruction, I have full confidence that Governor-Elect Evers will able to accomplish what the people of Wisconsin elected him to do – make Wisconsin a better place to live, work and learn.“
