Madison–State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance released the following statement immediately following the State of the State Address delivered by Governor Walker:
“The state of the state is historically strong, but Wisconsinites don’t need to hear it from Governor Walker to know it is true. They can feel it in their communities, where new businesses are opening with ‘help wanted’ signs displayed. They can feel it in their paychecks, where more money is being returned to them, not held hostage in Madison. Their children can feel it in college, where for the sixth year in a row, tuition has been frozen at University of Wisconsin schools. Teachers can feel it in the classroom, where historic investments in K-12 education have been made, giving them the necessary resources to teach our children. Parents who have children struggling with addiction can feel it as we expand treatment and recovery options. Finally, business owners can feel it, where we reduced burdensome red tape that inhibits job creation and growth.
“Now, with Governor Walker’s ambitious agenda, we will redouble our efforts. In the next few weeks the Legislature will take up bold new proposals: We will adopt Governor Walker’s $100 child tax credit, sharing the ‘reform dividend’ with the hardworking families of the state. We will provide more funding for schools through sparsity aid and low revenue relief. We will enact common-sense welfare reform, ensuring those who truly need assistance receive it, but that others take steps to reenter the workforce. We will provide stability in the health insurance market, guaranteeing coverage of preexisting conditions, and combating the out-of-control premium increases from Obamacare. We will invest in the rural areas of our state to help level the playing field between urban and rural communities and schools.
“It is clear that our reforms are working, but we have a lot more to do. Now is not the time to get complacent, now is the time to capture our momentum and keep moving Wisconsin forward.”
