Madison–State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), joined Attorney General Brad Schimel and others at Hometown Pharmacy in Appleton to highlight the use of the Deterra Drug Deactivation System:

“I am proud to join Hometown Pharmacy of Appleton to highlight the additional ways to properly dispose of unused medications. These drug deactivation pouches will be available in all 62 Hometown Pharmacy stores in Wisconsin, providing Wisconsinites in every corner of the state a responsible way to dispose of unwanted or unused medications. Residents of the 89th Assembly District can find a Hometown Pharmacy location in Peshtigo.”

The deactivation pouches offered by Hometown Pharmacy feature a simple three-step process that deactivates drugs by opening the pouch, placing unused medications inside, and filling halfway with warm water. Thirty seconds later, the pouch is sealed, you gently shake, and are ready to discard in the trash. Hometown’s program will ensure the deactivation pouches are offered to all customers upon request and specifically to customers with a short-term need for schedule II prescription painkillers

“Expanding options to individuals for the responsible disposal of medications is one of the more effective tools we have to reduce misuse and abuse of medications. Because of the partnerships between medical professionals, law enforcement and pharmacists, Wisconsin is a leader on the battle against opioid addiction.

“Today’s announcement is another example of that strong partnership and will go a long ways in our state’s fight. I would like to thank Hometown Pharmacy for the leadership and dedication on this important issue.”
