Students call for comprehensive gun safety measures, are ignored

MADISON – Today, Representative Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement regarding the Republican failure to take action to protect Wisconsin communities from gun violence.

“Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly sat in extraordinary session to address the gun violence epidemic. I was honored to share statements written by Racine high school students. These young people are standing up to demand comprehensive action to address gun violence, not only in our schools but in our wider communities.

“Again and again, Assembly Republicans have refused to address the wider issue of gun violence, which extends beyond our schools and into entire communities. Governor Walker’s proposed bill failed to address key, common-sense measures that would protect communities, families, and children. It puts buildings before our children, proposing a one-time grant for buildings instead of a comprehensive plan for common-sense gun safety, improved mental health care, and school safety.

“As Orlando and Las Vegas showed, schools are not the only place our families are at risk. 81 percent of Wisconsinites support universal background checks, but Republicans refused to take up this measure in February, and they refused to take it up again today.

We need meaningful action to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, and to support proactive mental health care. We need to listen to our young people and take concrete action to prevent future gun violence, instead of pushing this problem down the road with inadequate “band-aid” bills.”
