Federal Government Approves Wisconsin Health Care Stability Plan

Madison, WI – This Sunday, Governor Walker announced that the federal government has approved the Wisconsin Health Care Stability Plan, a concept that aims to protect Wisconsinites from rising healthcare costs.
The Wisconsin Health Care Stability Plan is an innovative approach that allows Wisconsin to leverage federal funding to create a state-based reinsurance plan that will lower healthcare premiums that are rising due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) estimates that premium rates on the Wisconsin individual health insurance marketplace will decrease by 3.5% from 2018 rates, and by 11% from the expected rates for 2019, had this plan not been approved.
Representative Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma) said, “This is wonderful news for our state, especially for districts like mine where too many folks are forced to decide between paying their health insurance or their mortgage. I’m very proud of our state and the changes we’ve made to better protect our most vulnerable populations from unaffordable care. I look forward to implementing more innovative solutions that will protect the people of Wisconsin for generations to come.”
In recent years, Wisconsin has made many significant improvements towards health care including but not limited to codifying Senior Care, the prescription drug program for seniors, into statute, eliminating wait lists for Family Care and the Children’s Long Term Support Waiver Program, which keeps families together and closer to home, increasing pay for vulnerable care workers who bring comfort to our loved ones, and providing incentives for new physicians to relocate to rural areas.
