Madison – Today, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson announced a plan to triple the rents paid by some recipients of federal housing subsidies. In response, Rep. Anderson released the following statement:

“Across the country, housing shortages and skyrocketing rents have pinched Americans of every stripe. The announcement from Secretary Ben Carson to raise the rents of the nation’s neediest is another in a series of callous steps to punish vulnerable Americans, while those at the top get all of the benefits. Just last week, it was announced that the nation’s largest banks received almost $3.6 billion in tax breaks for the first quarter of 2018 alone. The notion that we’d pay for these giveaways on the backs of the neediest Americans is wrongheaded and cruel.”

Rep. Anderson added “Beyond the immorality of such a proposal are the real impacts of this policy. Homelessness, crime, drug abuse, and the ills of poverty will plague our communities and tear families apart. At a time when crime is down and our cities are undergoing a nationwide revival, the idea we’d subject the country’s neediest to what amounts to a massive rent hike is cruel and wrongheaded. We need our leaders to show more humanity: enough with the avarice and greed.”
