MILWAUKEE – County Supervisor Marcelia Nicholson released the following statement regarding a recent Right Wisconsin article that singled out students of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) for disparaging comments.
“As a product of Milwaukee Public Schools and former MPS teacher, I am disgusted by the use of the word “convicts” to describe MPS students. This language not only degrades and dehumanizes some of the best and brightest children in our state – many of whom I have taught – but also perpetuates the hateful stereotype that inner city children are criminals, and therefore unworthy of respect.
“As an elected official it is my job to fight for everyone in our community, including our children, who are our greatest commodity. All students in Wisconsin – even those from the poorest ZIP codes – deserve more investment in their classrooms, their communities, and in their futures. All students are worthy of and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”
“Right Wisconsin owes all MPS students an apology. I stand with them in demanding one.”
Supervisor Nicholson represents the 5th District and was an MPS educator for several years.
