MILWAUKEE – Students from area school districts of Franklin, Greendale, Greenfield, Muskego, Oak Creek, and Whitnall will be engaging in a hands-on trades experience on Tuesday, November 13, beginning at 8:15 a.m. The event, sponsored by the Milwaukee Building & Construction Trades Council and the AFL-CIO, will be held at Whitnall High School, 5000 South 116th Street, Greenfield, as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2018: November 12 – 18, 2018.

Construction jobs are in high demand all across Wisconsin. The hands-on day is designed to help close the skilled labor gap by giving students hands-on experience and helping them learn about career opportunities available to them in the construction industry.

Dan Bukiewicz, president of the Milwaukee Building & Construction Trades Council, was thankful for the opportunity and happy students were able to learn more about the construction industry during National Apprenticeship Week.

“I am always thankful for opportunities that the Trades are able to provide in schools and talk about the good-paying jobs in the construction industry,” said Bukiewicz. “Students do not have to travel far after high school to find fulfilling careers with upward mobility. College may not be for everybody, and by providing this experience to high school students, we can attract more students to the construction industry. There are a lot of projects going on in Milwaukee at the moment, including the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino and The Couture, which will be breaking ground soon. Milwaukee has a booming economy with a lot of opportunity within the construction industry, and the more students seeking a career in construction will help Milwaukee build its future.”

“Our Summer Trades Institute opened students’ and families’ eyes to the world of skilled construction trades and we are pleased to partner once again with the Milwaukee Building & Construction Trades Council in this event,” said Gary Kiltz, Superintendent of Greendale Schools. “We are committed to making our students and community aware of the multiple career options available and hands-on events (such as this) are an excellent way for this meaningful career exploration to take place.”

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a national celebration that offers leaders in business, labor, education, and other critical partners a chance to express their support for apprenticeship. NAW also gives apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs, facilities, and apprentices in their community. The weekly events highlight the benefits of apprenticeship in preparing a highly-skilledworkforce to meet the talent needs of employers across diverse industries.
