Blanchardville – Kriss Marion, Democratic candidate for the 17th State Senate District, extended her sympathies to all of the southern Wisconsin communities hit hard by record rains and flooding, and her sincere gratitude to emergency responders, many of whom are volunteers risking their own lives to help others.
“Our communities and public employees are working hard to clean up and return to doing business. But now we need to look ahead. Our wetlands play such a valuable role in protecting our communities from flooding, it is time to reverse the tide of rollbacks to wetland regulations.” said Marion. “My opponent has voted over and over again to roll back environmental protections, prioritizing corporate profits over our rural communities and jeopardizing our way of life.”
Marion, who is on the Lafayette County Board and owns a bed and breakfast on her farm in Blanchardville, has long advocated for maintaining strong wetland zoning to protect development and infrastructure from flood damage. Marion has vocally opposed special interest handouts, developer carve-outs and environmental rollbacks that Marklein has advocated, saying they create an unfair balance between the rights of the public and the rights of special interests.
“We can’t do anything to avoid 11-inch precipitation events, but we can accept that we are likely to see more of them,” said Marion. “A status quo approach will continue to devastate our communities, and cost us millions of dollars in rebuilding costs and lost income.”
