MADISON, WI – With the November 6 election less than a month away, the League of Women Voters is engaging in various nonpartisan projects and campaigns to get out the vote including “Women Take The Polls!” art project. Lead artists Chele Isaac, Kelly Parks Snider and Rachel Griffin engaged community participants to create “get out and vote” yarn-bomb cozies that will be installed as a one-of-a-kind public art installation on the University of Wisconsin campus on Tuesday, October 23 from 3:00-7:00PM.
The Madison Arts Commission (MAC) unanimously approved “Women Take The Polls!”, a new BLINK temporary art project designed to get out the vote submitted by The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin in conjunction with the Art + Literature Laboratory and UW. Sheri Carter, 14th district Council Member remarked, “We have many ways to encourage voting. The yarn bomb is the most creative way to send the message. It will be appealing to young and mature adults and both will get the message to vote.”
“The installation is designed to capture the attention of potential voters and amplify the message that every vote matters in this November election,” Kelly Parks Snider wrote. “Our yarn-bomb broadsides will be a symbol of positive voter power!”
“The arts has always been a powerful medium for messages in movements. From the purple and yellow sashes suffragists wore to the banners held in protests and marches, fabric arts have played a dynamic role in voter rights movements. Today we’re using art to amplify voters’ reasons for casting a ballot in this midterm election,” said Erin Grunze, Executive Director of The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.

The public is welcome to the art installation on October 23. Join women artists, friends, and students at check in on the east side of the School of Education. Then head to Bascom Hill for the installation of the cozies and celebration to Get Out the Vote.

The cozies are anticipated to remain on campus from Tuesday, October 23 through Tuesday, November 6, the Fall General Election Day.
