Franklin, WI – Eileen Figueroa, LULAC of Wisconsin State Director issued the following statement following the recent wave of hate crimes across our nation and Donald Trump’s announcement of his intent to revoke Birthright Citizenship. “Our prayers and condolences go out to all the families who have lost loved ones and who who were injured to due to recent acts of hate. Sadly and tragically, since 2016 we have seen a dramatic increase in hate crimes around our nation.

This last week alone, we saw an unprecedented attempt to assassinate President Barack Obama, Secretary Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senators Harris and Booker, U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, former Attorney General Holder, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, democratic supporter George Soros and members of the media. This was in addition to the hate driven murders in Kentucky and equally tragic, at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Philadelphia. As we look at the targets and victims, any reasonable person will see a straight line between them and remarks made by this administration.

Equally concerning is that rather than moderating remarks to minimize further violence and/or loss of life, this president is continuing to escalate fear and division by making disingenuous statements regarding refugees fleeing violence in Central America and is attempting to motivate his followers to vote by falsely claiming to have the authority to revoke the right to birthright citizenship. Birthright citizenship is clearly guaranteed in the United States Constitution and any change would require an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

As such, LULAC of Wisconsin denounces his hateful, anti-immigrant rhetoric and the numerous intimations regarding our Jewish and Muslim, LGBTQ brothers and sisters, which are clearly anti-American, and encourage all to vote in this upcoming election.”
