Longtime Neighborhood Leader and Public School Activist Pledges Strong Support for MPS Students and Parents

MILWAUKEE: Marva Herndon, President and founder of the Bryant Heights Neighborhood Association and mother of four Milwaukee Public School graduates has filed to run for the District 1 seat on the MPS Board of School Directors.

Marva is a longtime resident of District 1, and enjoyed a wonderful career as a computer programmer.  Marva is well known in the public education community for her fierce commitment to education, challenging the expansion of charter and voucher schools, funding cuts to public schools, and demanding the public schools all Milwaukee children deserve.

Marva led a successful fight that ended with the passage of a city ordinance requiring all schools to have a fully equipped outdoor playground space.  Marva has also testified many times before the City Chartering Board and the State Legislature on such issues as funding cuts to public schools, sale of public school buildings and takeover attacks on MPS. As a co-founder of Women Informed Marva organized a bus tour of private, failing, unaccountable voucher schools to demonstrate how public tax dollars are taken from public schools and squandered on private voucher schools.  No one in this race will have more experience in public education or neighborhood service than Marva.

Marva was twice awarded the City of Milwaukee “Unsung Hero Award” for her outstanding community service.  Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) also honored her with their, “Friend of Public Education” award.

School Board candidate Marva Herndon issued this statement on her candidacy,

“I will be an unwavering voice on the school board for students and families. My record speaks for itself when it comes to defending public education. I have been present, vocal and organizing at nearly every battle for our public schools and will build on my lifetime of service on the school board. When I am elected, I will work with the MPS Administration to secure healthy, lead free school environments and expand early childhood education for all. I will work closely with all MPS families to put forward solutions that increase school attendance and create a stable foundation for each child to excel.”

“I believe Ms. Marva Herndon is the person we need for the school board. We have been neighbors for 18 years, and Marva has taught me so much.  When I didn’t understand politics and really didn’t care about it, she had a way of explaining it. That made me want to know even more. I have twins currently enrolled in an MPS middle school and Marva helped me become well educated on public schools and their offerings. Marva is a leader who really cares,”

Mrs. Joy Robinson, resident of Bryant Heights Neighborhood.

“Marva Herndon has been a tireless supporter of public schools for many years. In our work together in the Coalition to Stop the MPS Takeover and Schools and Communities United (SCU), Marva has played a leading role in fighting the privatization of our public schools and in support of well-funded public community schools that serve all children. She will be a strong advocate for our public schools and the children of Milwaukee,”

Bob Peterson, Co-founder of La Escuela Fratney, Candidate for MPS School Board Citywide.
