Democratic challenger advocates for a strong State Treasurer to provide checks and balances

(Milwaukee) – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Matt Flynn today made the following statement opposing the elimination of the State Treasurer position.

“One of our nation’s most important legacies, since the time of the founding fathers, has been checks and balances. The position of the State Treasurer was written into the Wisconsin Constitution to provide such checks and balances on the governor. We should not do away with it.

“Scott Walker and Madison Republicans will stop at nothing to gain absolute power in Wisconsin. That’s why they slowly removed powers from an elected State Treasurer and gave them to unelected officials. The Treasurer is also important as an independent voice on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.

“Wisconsin has a proud tradition of fiscal responsibility and holding the government accountable. Scott Walker has betrayed that tradition time and time again. We need to return oversight of our state finances and other responsibilities to an independent State Treasurer who will provide checks and balances while remaining accountable to voters.”
