Interstate traffic to use signed detour route: US 14 and US 51

Starting Tuesday night (May 9), crews will remove the existing Manogue Road bridge over Interstate 39/90 north of Janesville. The bridge, located at mile marker 168, will be removed during the nighttime hours to safely and efficiently complete this phase of construction while minimizing impacts to the traveling public.

Nighttime single lane closures on I-39/90 in this area will start at 8 p.m. for most of the week. For the safety of the traveling public and construction crews, one direction of I-39/90 will be completely closed to all traffic, between Janesville and Edgerton, on the following nights:

  • 10 p.m. Tuesday (May 9) to 6 a.m. Wednesday (May 10)I-39/90 southbound (eastbound) is closed to all traffic from WIS 73/US 51 in Edgerton to US 14 in Janesville. Southbound Interstate traffic will be diverted off I-39/90 at Edgerton Exit 160.

o        The southbound on ramps will be closed from WIS 73/US 51 and WIS 59 in Edgerton. Alternate routes are required.

o        One lane will remain open on the northbound Interstate.

  • 10 p.m. Wednesday (May 10) to 6 a.m. Thursday (May 11) I-39/90 northbound (westbound) is closed to all traffic between US 14 in Janesville and US 51 near Edgerton. Northbound Interstate traffic will be diverted off I-39/90 at Janesville Exit 171B.

o        The northbound on ramps will also be closed from US 14 and WIS 26 in Janesville. Alternate routes are required.

o        One lane will remain open on I-39/90 southbound.

During the nightly closures, Interstate traffic will be redirected to the signed detour route of US 14 in Janesville and US 51 through Edgerton. Motorists may encounter backups and delays on the detour route depending on traffic volumes. Motorists who typically use I-39/90 during the overnight hours should plan ahead and allow for extra time to reach their destination.

All closures, lane restrictions and work operations are weather dependent and subject to change.

Construction-related noise is expected during these nighttime operations as crews jack-hammer and remove the bridge deck. Once the existing structure is removed, crews will begin to construct the new bridge which will improve safety, meet current design standards and lengthen the bridge over I-39/90 to accommodate the Interstate expansion between Beloit and Madison.

The $2.2 million bridge project is expected to be completed in late August 2017.
