Interstate traffic to use signed detour route: US 12/18 and WIS 73

Next week, crews will remove the existing County AB bridge, located at mile marker 144, over Interstate 39/90 near Madison. The bridge will be removed during the nighttime hours to safely and efficiently complete this phase of construction.

Nighttime single lane closures on I-39/90 will start at 8 p.m. each night. For the safety of the traveling public and construction crews, one direction of I-39/90 will be closed to all traffic on the following nights:

  • 11 p.m. Tuesday (April 18) to 5 a.m. Wednesday (April 19)I-39/90 northbound (westbound) is closed to all traffic between WIS 73, near Edgerton, and US 12/18. Northbound Interstate traffic will be diverted off I-39/90 at Edgerton Exit 160.

o   The northbound on ramps will also be closed from WIS 73/US 51 (Edgerton Exit 160); US 51 (Stoughton Exit 156); and County N (Exit 147). Alternate routes are required.

o   One lane will remain open on I-39/90 southbound.

  • 11 p.m. Wednesday (April 19) to 5 a.m. Thursday (April 20)I-39/90 southbound(eastbound) is closed to all traffic from US 12/18 to WIS 73/US 51 in Edgerton. Southbound Interstate traffic will be diverted off I-39/90 at the Madison Beltline interchange (Exit 142).

o   Both ramps from US 12/18 (Madison Beltline) to I-39/90 southbound will be closed. The southbound on ramps from County N and US 51 (east of Stoughton) will also be closed. Alternate routes are required.

o   Motorists traveling to Stoughton are encouraged to use US 51 (Stoughton Road), west of I-39/90.

o   One lane will remain open on the northbound Interstate.

During the nightly closures, Interstate traffic will follow the signed detour route of US 12/18 and WIS 73. Motorists who typically use I-39/90 during the overnight hours are strongly encouraged to plan alternate routes and budget extra time to reach their destination.

Between 8 p.m. Thursday (April 20) and 5 a.m. Friday (April 21), periodic nighttime slowdowns will occur on I-39/90 northbound near the County AB bridge as crews finish removing the old structure. Motorists should plan ahead for potential delays in this area.

All closures, lane restrictions and work operations are weather dependent and subject to change.

Construction-related noise is expected during these nighttime operations as crews jack-hammer and remove the bridge deck. This bridge replacement project will improve safety, meet current design standards and lengthen the bridge over I-39/90 to accommodate the Interstate expansion between Beloit and Madison.

The $2.8 million project is expected to be completed in early September 2017.
