The Wisconsin State Assembly will vote tomorrow on SB48, a bill that would allow water utilities to help pay for removal of lead service lines. SB48 passed the State Senate unanimously on October 31, 2017. WISPIRG Director Peter Skopec issued the following statement ahead of the Assembly vote:

“The health of our children depends on safe drinking water. Facilitating removal of lead service lines is the biggest single step our legislature can take right now to protect our children from lead-laced water.

SB48 would give communities a meaningful, common-sense tool to protect Wisconsinites from exposure to this potent neurotoxin. We applaud our Senators for their unanimous vote last week and now urge State Representatives to follow suit. The Assembly should pass SB48 as adopted by the Senate, without weakening it.

We owe it to our kids to get the lead out of drinking water. Protecting children from lead exposure will require committed, long-term action at every level of government. Passing SB48 would be an important step in the right direction.”
