MADISON – Wisconsin Property Taxpayers, Inc. Thursday issued the following statement regarding the Joint Finance Committee’s vote to eliminate the forestry mill tax in Wisconsin, which levies 16.97 cents per $1,000 of property value, and was enacted in 1924.
“By axing the state’s forestry mill tax on property owners, the Joint Finance Committee voted to put $180 million back into the hands of Wisconsin families over the next two years” John Jacobson, WPT Government and Member Relations Director said. “Those who pay property tax in Wisconsin have been happy to do more than their fair share over the past 93 years to maintain Wisconsin’s forests. And with a healthy forest acreage of 17 million, local property taxpayers are glad to see the state eliminate its only property tax, and finally assume responsibility for this program.
“WPT and its members thank the committee for fulfilling this critical piece of Governor Walker’s budget proposal, and look forward to seeing this very overdue tax reform signed into law.”
