BLS Data: Wisconsin’s Year-over-Year Job Gains in Manufacturing Rank 2ndNationally, 1st in Midwest in October
Wisconsin’s month-over-month percent gains in private sector & total nonfarm employment rank in top 10 of US
MADISON – Today, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen released the following statement on the employment data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing that Wisconsin’s ranked 2nd nationally in 12-month manufacturing job gains in October and first in the Midwest, and ranked in the top 10 nationally in several measurements among states:
“With our labor force and total nonfarm and private-sector job totals reaching all-time highs in October, today’s data now shows Wisconsin is a top 10 state in multiple indicators of the labor market economy during the month,” Secretary Allen said. ” This is great news for job seekers and job creators, and our continuing investments in developing the workforce will ensure a strong talent pipeline as more Wisconsin employers locate and expand across our state.”
Other highlights in today’s release by BLS include:
- Wisconsin’s month-over-month percent increase in total non-farm jobs ranked 7th nationally, 1st in the Midwest
- Wisconsin’s month-over-month percent increase in private sector jobs ranked 7th nationally, 1st in Midwest
- Wisconsin’s 12-month increase in manufacturing jobs ranked 2nd nationally, 1st in the Midwest
- Wisconsin’s month-over-month increase in manufacturing jobs ranked 3rd nationally, 2nd in the Midwest
- Wisconsin’s month-over-month percent increase in manufacturing jobs ranked 7th nationally, 2nd in the Midwest
- Wisconsin’s 12-month percent increase in private sector jobs ranked 2nd in the Midwest
Other indicators of the state of Wisconsin’s economy include:
- Initial UI claims ended 2016 at their lowest level in their last 30 years. Year 2017 initial UI claims are running at the lowest in at least the past 30 years.
- Continuing unemployment claims ended 2016 at their lowest level since 1973. Continuing unemployment claims in Wisconsin are running at the lowest in at least the past 30 years.
- Additionally, 2017 YTD totals for both initial and continuing claims through week 44 are both below 2016 YTD totals for the same time period.
- Moody’s Investors Service has upgraded the states credit rating, noting that “(T)he stable outlook reflects the expectation that the state will experience moderate economic growth and will continue its prudent fiscal management practices.”
