Dem members of the congressional delegation are slamming President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.
Baldwin noted the move comes as the FBI is investigating whether members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to influence last year’s election.
“President Trump’s decision to make this move … is an attack on the rule of law and raises more questions that demand answers. Firing the FBI director does not place the White House, the president or his campaign above the law,” Baldwin said, urging the Senate Intelligence Committee to continue its investigation.
U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, meanwhile, called the firing “a grotesque abuse of power.”
“I hope and pray this had nothing to do with the FBI’s independent investigation into Russian interference and possible collusion of Trump associates with Russia during the 2016 election,” the La Crosse Dem said, calling for congressional hearings.
U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Green Bay, sent a series of tweets this morning raising concerns about the timing of the firing. He wrote it “is imperative that both Congressional and FBI investigations into Russian interference in our country continue unimpeded and unaltered.”
“Americans deserve a full, fair, and honest account of what happened. They deserve the confidence that their government is telling the truth,” Gallagher wrote, adding “We cannot afford any lingering questions. The legitimacy of our democracy and the sanctity of the rule of law is too important.”
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, issued a short statement on the firing, “I thank Director Comey for his service and wish him well in the future.”
