(WAUKESHA, WI) – Tonight, a free outdoor concert at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center for the Arts (19805 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, WI) will celebrate military service, family, community, and music. The “Big Band 4th” concert is the opening night celebration of the Wisconsin Philharmonic’s Starry Nights free outdoor concert series. It starts at 6 pm. The performance will be preceded by an Honor Walk for local veterans and their family at 5 pm.
“Tonight’s concert is an opportunity to celebrate the 4th of July weekend while honoring local veterans who have made sacrifices to help preserve our freedom,” said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. “The Honor Walk is a therapeutic way to connect participating veterans with nature, while increasing awareness of the issues they face when they return home. “
The Honor Walk will be a one or two mile walk for veterans and their families through Mitchell Park. The Walk is inspired by Veterans Trek, an organization that provides healthy outdoor recreation and jobs for veterans and the issues they face by connecting them with nature. Veterans can register for the walk here.
“This event helps highlight the importance of nature and music in creating a healthy environment for our veterans,” said Veterans Trek Interim Executive Director Dan Buttery. ”Many of our veterans are coping with trauma when they return home. Music can allow them to express emotions they have no words for and outdoor recreation can relieve stress and increase their sense of purpose.”
