RACINE, WISCONSIN – As House Speaker Paul Ryan hosts a closed “town hall” on CNN, Voces de la Frontera and Youth Empowered in the Struggle will join hundreds of his constituents and call on him to reject Trump’s pro-corporate, white supremacist agenda. Community members will urge Ryan to support DACA, reject funding for Trump’s border wall and mass deportations, and work for policies that help workers, not CEOs.
DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a program created by President Obama after pressure from immigrant youth that allows almost 800,000 young people to work legally and remain with their families without fear of deportation. In July, 10 anti-immigrant state attorneys general threatened to sue to eliminate DACA if Trump doesn’t end the program by September 5th.
“Voces de la Frontera, YES, and our allies have been calling on Speaker Ryan to have town hall meetings for the last two years,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “This made-for-tv stunt is pure theater. If Paul Ryan had a real town hall that was open to the public, he would have thousands of his constituents calling on him to stand up against corporate interests and the politics of white nationalism.”
Today’s rally comes one day after young immigrant constituents of Speaker Ryan led a rally outside of Ryan’s church in Janesville. Speakers urged Ryan to act on the values of his faith, condemn Trump’s embrace of white supremacy, and support DACA.
“Paul Ryan, you are either with us or against us,” said Ruben Ramos of Youth Empowered in the Struggle, a constituent of Paul Ryan. “You are either with DACA or against DACA. People need you. Why have you refused to meet with us? You must protect DACA. On September 5th DACA could be repealed. Don’t give any money to the wall.”
