Senator Steve Nass (R-Whitewater), Vice-Chairman of the Senate Universities and Technical Colleges Committee, responded to statements from JFC Co-Chair John Nygren (R-Marinette) threatening to not only kill the Governor’s proposed 5% UW System tuition cut for 2018-19, but also ending the popular tuition freeze that has already saved families at least $6,300.  Nass noted the Assembly leader has been very open to increasing the gas tax, as well.

“If the Legislature raises the gas tax and allows the UW System to restart their rampage of unjustified tuition increases, it would make the 2017-19 biennial budget one of the worst for the middle class in recent memory.  Mostly, because it will be done by the party that pledged to reduce the burden of government on them,” Nass said.

Nass noted that the Legislature has continually found resources to pass legislation for those that have made poor choices in their lives.  However, he stressed that middle class families that are doing the hard work of raising their children, paying their bills and remaining law-abiding get nothing but the tax burden to pay for it all.

“There have been no reforms adopted in the UW System that would justify eliminating the resident tuition freeze and the public supports the 5% tuition cut.  The only opposition comes from UW System administrators in closed door meetings lobbying legislators.  The choice is clear, each legislator can stand with Wisconsin’s middle class families or they can stand with the all talk-no action UW System leadership,” Nass said.
