MADISON – Late today, Governor Scott Walker signed Senate Bill (SB) 2 which changes a tax filing due date in state law before March 15, 2017, a Federal tax filing deadline.

“I appreciate Governor Walker’s attention to the time constraints of this legislation,” Marklein said. “We needed to get this done before the March 15, 2017 deadline to have an impact.”

In 2015, the Federal Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act was passed. This act changed the federal tax return due dates for certain entities that file state income and franchise tax returns.  SB 2 impacts the March 15, 2017 filing deadline. It does not impact other future deadlines. These deadlines will be considered in future legislation.

SB 2 passed the State Senate unanimously, 32-0, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 and was passed by the Assembly, March 7, 2017.  SB 2 and AB 26 were co-authored by Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield) and co-sponsored by a bi-partisan group of legislators from the Senate and the Assembly.

“SB 2 is a great example of legislation that begins in the offices of hard-working professionals who identify a problem and seek change,” Marklein said. “A tax professional in the 17th District recognized that Wisconsin’s due dates were out of sync with the Federal due dates. They contacted me and we were able to fix it.  Inconsistency causes confusion for taxpayers, tax preparers and the Department of Revenue.  This bill aligns our state tax return dates with federal dates and reforms government for the better.”
