[Madison, WI]  Today the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel released an article detailing new and troubling allegations in the ongoing story of the innapropriate relationship between The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Foundation and Chancellor Richard Wells. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald released the following statement:

“The most recent allegations of inappropriate and illegal dealings between The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Foundation and Chancellor Richard Wells have demonstrated a clear gap in the oversight of the foundations that interact with the University of Wisconsin System. A pattern of misconduct has emerged that simply cannot be dismissed as an isolated incident. It is clear that the current parameters governing our universities’ chancellors are woefully insufficient and additional checks are needed to prevent this type of misconduct in current and future university administrations.

I am confident that the Department of Justice is conducting a thorough investigation in the civil suit filed against the Chancellor in January and will take into account all additional revelations that have come to light. The pressing question now is how much the University of Wisconsin System knew about these concerning allegations and how this misconduct was allowed to continue for so long. These questions will no doubt be at the forefront as the legislature considers both an audit of the University of Wisconsin System and the upcoming biennial budget.”
