Madison, Wisconsin – On Thursday, State Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), the Co-Chairs of the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, released the following statement regarding savings in the Medicaid budget projected by the Department of Health Services:

“We are pleased with the efforts by the Department of Health Services to save $325 million.   This is the third straight year we won’t have to pass a budget repair bill to cover a deficit in the Medicaid budget.
While having a surplus this large in Medicaid is rare, it’s a testament to responsible and careful budgeting.  Wisconsin was able to cover everyone living in poverty without taking the Obamacare expansion.  Once again, our state is leading in reforms.
It’s our hope the success Wisconsin has enjoyed will lead to more flexibility from the federal government.  As Congress wrestles with the best way to replace Obamacare, we hope they look to how Wisconsin has ensured everyone can get coverage while still protecting taxpayers.”
