Janesville – Today the Democratic members of the State Assembly Committee on Agriculture toured three farms in Rock County west of Janesville. These tours are the first of several the Democrats on the committee will be taking.

“I grew up on a farm and still own one myself, so I’m excited to visit farms in other parts of our state,” said Rep. Dave Considine (D-Baraboo), who serves as the committee’s ranking Democrat. “We appreciate the position we’re in as members of the Agriculture Committee to make a real difference in one of Wisconsin’s most important industries. But we wanted to take the committee’s business outside of the Capitol and meet farmers on their own land, so we organized this and invited Rep. Lee Nerison, the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee. It was a very informative trip and a great time.”

The Democrats on the Agriculture Committee also include Reps. Fred Kessler (D-Milwaukee), Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit), Jason Fields (D-Milwaukee), and Don Vruwink (D-Milton). Monday’s tours took place at Amazing Grace Family Farm, the Roger Rebout & Sons Farms, and the Steve and Debi Towns farm. All three are located in Rep. Vruwink’s Assembly district.

“I’m pleased the Ag Committee came to my district for the first set of farm tours,” said Vruwink. “Like Rep. Considine, I grew up on a farm. I worked on three different farms during college to support myself. I have many family members in Central Wisconsin who still operate farms. Among the things I am interested in is how can we as a Legislature assist and encourage young people to take over family farms when the elders are ready to retire. I also want to see what state government can do to find new markets for Wisconsin agricultural products.”
