MADISON – Tomorrow, Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) will introduce legislation that would improve women’s health care access by allowing them to fill their birth control prescriptions for 12 months at a time.
Wisconsin health insurance plans currently only cover prescriptions of birth control for 30 or 90 days, requiring women to return to their pharmacies every few months. This unnecessary limitation is a barrier to contraceptive access for many, especially for those who work multiple jobs or have limited transportation options. Research has shown that dispensing a 12-month supply of birth control can reduce the odds of unintended pregnancy by 30% and reduce abortion rates by 46%.
