MADISON – On the first day of the fall floor session, state Representative Jessie Rodriguez (R-Oak Creek) lauded her colleagues in the Assembly for unanimously approving Senate Bill 99, legislation that will name the bridge on the Hank Aaron State Trail after former state representative and senator, Richard Grobschmidt. Grobschmidt served in the Assembly for five terms before serving three terms in the state Senate.

The bill authorizes the Department of Natural Resources to erect signage naming the Richard A. Grobschmidt Memorial Bridge on the Hank Aaron State Trail. The construction and maintenance of the sign will be privately funded through donations.

“Rick was known for being a hard worker and he would never brag but many of his successful accomplishments are still benefitting residents and children throughout the state today,” said Rodriguez.

Senator Grobschmidt championed legislation that helped establish a school-to-work apprenticeship program and public school open enrollment. While his primary interests were in education he also focused on issues related to technology, libraries and child welfare.

Grobschmidt began his career as a high school teacher at South Milwaukee High School – his alma mater – in 1966. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1985 representing the 21st Assembly District and later the 7th Senate District.

“This legislation properly honors Rick who worked tirelessly to improve life for the residents of my district,” said Rodriguez. “I can’t think of a better honor for a great man.”
