On Wednesday, the Joint Finance Committee (the legislative budget committee) voted unanimously in a bipartisan fashion to adopt a budget amendment which I authored that will provide up to $1 million in grants to Wisconsin school districts for the purchase of technical education equipment.

Under this program, schools districts can apply for matching grants ranging anywhere between $10,000 to $50,000. To be eligible, schools must demonstrate a need, show projected outcomes, and secure matching funds through businesses partnerships and community collaboration. The grant program will be run through the state Department of Workforce Development.

Through this new grant program, Wisconsin will encourage greater student participation in technical education courses and provide more opportunities for young men and women to choose careers in manufacturing. Wisconsin is currently experiencing a skilled worker shortage with over 98,000 jobs available today on the Department of Workforce Development’s career website: Job Center of Wisconsin.
