Rep. Macco Thanks Mayor Schmitt for Service

Green Bay…Representative John Macco (R-Ledgeview) released the following statement following the announcement from Mayor Jim Schmitt that he will not be seeking re-election in 2019

“Mayor Schmitt, or simply Jim, will go down as one of the most prolific and prudent public servants to serve the great City of Green Bay,” said Rep. Macco. “His accomplishments cannot be overstated. He spearheaded the redevelopment of Military, Velp and University avenues; he saw the promise in the dilapidated Port Plaza Mall; and led the redevelopment of Downtown Green Bay by bringing in millions of dollars of economic development.”

Mayor Schmitt will end his term in April 2019, 16 years after taking office. His term in office began at the end of the Dot-com bubble, went through the Great Recession, and will end in a time of new prosperity for the area.

“The function of a Mayor is to spend taxpayer dollars in the most effective and efficient way possible,” continued Rep. Macco. “No one has done that better than Mayor Schmitt. The City of Green Bay runs on $105 Million per year, and during Mayor Schmitt’s tenure the City of Green Bay has decreased its debt by almost 30%.

“Mayor Schmitt brought the Green Bay community together. From the three Business Improvement Districts created, multiple neighborhood associations founded and revitalization of Bay Beach, he led the vision of making Green Bay a great place to live.

“I thank Jim for his service and for making this announcement. The City of Green Bay will be able to use the next two years to find someone who can efficiently and effectively manage Green Bay. Whoever is elected will have a city that is well-run and on the rise.”
