Madison, WI – Yesterday, Rep. Jesse Kremer (R-59 Kewaskum) and Senator Duey Stroebel (R-20 Saukville) circulated for co-sponsorship the “Saluting Our Veterans Act” to extend a discount on a conservation patron license for most hunting and fishing privileges received by veterans. Under current law, in the state of Wisconsin a recipient of a Purple Heart from the U.S. Armed Forces is eligible to receive this discount. A constituent however had brought to our attention that this discount does not apply to service members in state or out of state who have received medals above the level of a Purple Heart such as Medals of Honor or a Silver Star.
Rep. Kremer stated the following upon release of the bill, “While the current policy has been an important step in recognizing the sacrifice of our service members, to truly demonstrate our appreciation and better carry out the spirit of the original 2013 bill, the policy should be expanded. The Saluting Our Veterans Act provides this discount and recognition. I am grateful to the constituent who brought to my attention as We should not be singling out valor but rather show appreciation to all service members who have earned medals equal to or higher than that of a Purple Heart.”
“This bill honors all who have served valiantly to protect our country and freedoms,” said Senator Stroebel after circulation of the Saluting Our Veterans Act. “Ensuring more veterans take part in Wisconsin’s sporting heritage one small token of our appreciation.”
To ensure streamlined assistance and the best expertise for our veterans, verification of having received a qualified award will be provided via a county veteran services office working in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources. As a Veteran, Representative Kremer looks forward to fully recognizing the courage and service of U.S. Armed Forces members who partake in Wisconsin’s rich hunting and fishing heritage.
