MADISON – Late last week, just after Governor Walker approved up to $3 billion in cash payments to a foreign company and a $76 billion state budget that once again failed to adequately fund our kids’ education, it was announced that Milwaukee Public Schools would need to cut nearly $20 million from this year’s budget. Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee), an MPS alum and member of the Assembly Education Committee, released the following statement:

“It is unacceptable and un-American that while Republicans were able to find billions of taxpayer dollars to give away to a foreign company and slash taxes for the wealthy elite, our public schools are again forced to make significant cuts. As long as Wisconsinites are making subsidy payments to Foxconn, no school should experience cuts of any sort. Like they’ve done since unconstitutionally protecting their own power six years ago, Republicans have once again passed a rigged budget that fails Wisconsin kids.

“I commend Dr. Driver and MPS staff for their commitment to doing everything they can to absorb this shortfall without making cuts within the classroom.

“While Democrats remain committed to adequately funding education, our schools must endure yet another budget cycle where Republicans enrich campaign donors and abandon our kids.”
