Madison, Wisconsin — State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) on behalf of the Wisconsin State Assembly honored the public service of former Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), Ben Brancel. Representative Ballweg presented Secretary Brancel and his wife, Gail, with a joint resolution that was passed by the legislature on November 7th.

Recently, Secretary Brancel retired from his work of public service to raise beef cattle on his family’s 290-acre farm, which is owned by his son and daughter-in-law.

“Through Secretary Brancel’s hard work and dedication to the state of Wisconsin, he has earned the trust and respect of people from all over the state,” said Ballweg. “I am honored to have the opportunity to recognize his accomplishments.”

Secretary Brancel was born and raised in Marquette County, and he went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Since then, Secretary Brancel has held positions, such as the Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly, State Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Agency, State Relations Liaison for UW-Madison’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Secretary of DATCP.

Throughout Secretary Brancel’s career, he has lead several agricultural organizations, and he has received various awards on his support for the agricultural industry in Wisconsin.

“I wish Ben and his wife all the best as they embark on this new chapter,” said Ballweg.
