Hi, this is State Representative Jimmy Anderson and this is the weekly Democratic radio address.

Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy family and to reflect on the important things in life

Every one of us experiences moments of joy and moments of tragedy.

These moments come without warning and can turn your world upside down.

7 years ago, my life was changed forever.

My family’s car was hit by a drunk driver, I lost my mom, my dad, and my little brother.

I was badly injured and the doctors weren’t sure if I would survive.

It took multiple surgeries and a pound of steel in my spine to save my life.

It was during my recovery that I was contacted by my insurance company.  I was told I was approaching my lifetime maximums.

I knew I still had hundreds of thousands of dollars still to go for complex medical procedures.

I was scared and I didn’t know what I was going to do.

I was just a student and I knew I didn’t have that kind of money.

Soon after that, I got a reprieve.

A letter from my insurance company saying the provisions of the Affordable Care Act had kicked in, meaning there were no longer lifetime maximums.

Because of the Affordable Care Act, I was able to put my life back together.

Each day I live with the tragedy of losing my family.

And I am also faced with unique challenges.

But I am also very thankful.

Thankful that a law was in place to keep me from losing everything.

And I get to wake up every morning, go to the Capitol, and try to make a difference in people’s lives.

Just like the ACA made a difference in my life.

So this week, as you sit down for turkey with family and friends, remember to give thanks for the things in life that matter.

Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving, this is Representative Jimmy Anderson.
