The week-long official City of Milwaukee celebration in Bronzeville gets started in an active and healthy way with the second annual HaRUNbee 5K Walk/Run tomorrow Saturday, August 5, followed immediately by the Bronzeville Cultural & Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on North Ave. between N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. and N. 7th St.

The HaRUNbee 5K Walk/Run for Healthy Birth Outcomes is sponsored by Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin and will wind through Bronzeville and the Harambee neighborhood. In-person registration tomorrow starts at 7:30 a.m. and the event will begin at 9 a.m. at N. 6th St. and W. North Ave. To register online for the 5K Walk/Run, please go to http://bit.ly/29oJeoQ.

The festival will feature three stages (Main, Gospel and Youth) with live performances, a kids’ zone, resource tables featuring city departments, community groups/agencies and others, as well as an array of vendors and food offerings.

Hosted by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, the 2017 Bronzeville Week (August 5 – 12) events will include healthy, positive and family-friendly activities infused with art, culture and commerce.

A list of Saturday’s entertainers for each stage is attached. The Youth Stage will be located at N. 7th St. and W. North Ave., the Gospel Stage near N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. and W. North Ave., and the Main Stage near N. 5th and W. North Ave.

Alderwoman Coggs, who spearheaded the successful effort to have Bronzeville Week made an official City of Milwaukee initiative and who has worked to build the event on several fronts since its inception, said positive momentum for the week’s events is building. “We are looking forward to the HaRUNbee Walk/Run kicking things off tomorrow in a healthy way and then we launch our week-long celebration by bringing the community together for music, food and fun during the Bronzeville Cultural and Arts Festival,” she said.

On Sunday, August 6, Bronzeville Crown Sunday will include services and an opportunity for the community to come together for a neighborhood beautification effort. Community members are invited to the outdoor services at 9 a.m. at King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church, 2375 N. 4th St., to be followed by the community clean-up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Monday, August 7, there will be “Bronzeville Historical Conversation: The Role of Art in the Fight for Social Justice” – beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Milwaukee Urban League, 435 W. North Ave.

Bounded by Garfield Avenue to Center Street, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive to 7th Street, the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District is wholly located in the 6th Aldermanic District.

The Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District is a City of Milwaukee redevelopment initiative inspired by Milwaukee’s original Bronzeville, and it is striving to revitalize the area of Milwaukee where African-American culture has been a mainstay. The Bronzeville Redevelopment Plan seeks to create economic development in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in a way that recaptures the enthusiasm and attractiveness of the original Bronzeville District.
