MILWAUKEE – Governor Scott Walker joined State Superintendent Tony Evers, teachers, and members of the Milwaukee Public School District today in welcoming students to their first day of school at Walt Whitman School in Milwaukee.
“Our state has some of the best and brightest minds in the country and it’s always exciting to see these motivated young students return to school, eager to learn,” said Governor Walker. “We believe every child deserves access to a great education that provides them with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in college, career, and life. I’m especially proud to kick off this 2017-2018 school year knowing that our state budget includes a historic $639 million increase for Wisconsin’s K-12 schools.”
Wisconsin students have one of the highest graduation rates in the country and some of the best ACT scores among states that mandate the test (U.S. News & World Report, ACT Inc.). Additionally, more than 90 percent of the school districts in the state meet or exceed expectations according to report cards (Department of Public Instruction).
The 2017-2019 Biennial Budget will include more actual dollars for K-12 education than ever before in Wisconsin’s history. The $639 million increase will support all the state’s K-12 schools. Investments include career exploration programs, such as the Early College Credit Program, Career and Technical Education grants, Fabrication Laboratories, and other programs that help ensure every student succeeds.
