Unemployment rate hits 3.1 percent, lowest since 1999 and 5-point drop since Gov. Walker took office

[Madison, Wis.] – In case you missed it, Wisconsin continues to move forward under Gov. Scott Walker’s bold conservative leadership, with unemployment hitting 3.1 percent, the lowest since 1999. Today, more people are working than ever before and Wisconsin is ranked a top ten state for business for the first time.

As Gov. Walker continues fighting to cut taxes and make historic investments in our classrooms, this is just further proof that reforms he and Republicans passed have our state headed in the right direction.

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate continues to drop and is now estimated at 3.1 percent for May, according to data from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

The DWD said the 3.1 percent rate is the lowest in the state since October 1999, the second lowest rate on record. Statewide unemployment data goes back to 1976.

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate is again lower than the national rate, which was 4.3 percent in May. Both the national rate and the state rate went down 0.1 percent from April to May.

“With more people working in Wisconsin than ever in state history and a state unemployment rate hovering near the lowest on record, we are taking the necessary steps to continue building our best-in-class workforce to meet the labor market needs of the modern economy,” said Ray Allen, DWD secretary. …
