– U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wausau, in an interview Wednesday about the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others during a GOP baseball practice in Virginia. Duffy cited threats and violence against Republicans and Democrats, adding “we have to look at this and take the temperature down.” He also urged the country to “take a pause and really rethink our values and our morals.”

— U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan called for unity following a shooting that injured four people, including a top member of the House GOP leadership team.

Ryan, R-Janesville, said while addressing the House yesterday that the chamber’s members “are one family.”

“We are united in our shock. We are united in our anguish. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” Ryan said to a bipartisan standing ovation.

— The conservative Americans for Prosperity this week launched a digital ad campaign to push U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s constituents to demand tax reform.

The Wisconsin campaign is part of the group’s nationwide effort “to fix our nation’s broke and overly intrusive tax code.”

— U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin on Thursday pressed HHS Secretary Tom Price on how national health care changes would impact the opioid epidemic in Wisconsin.

In a hearing to review the fiscal year 2018 budget request for the Department of Health and Human Services, Baldwin claimed the Republicans’ health care legislation would force Wisconsin families to “pay more for less care.”

“If addressing opioids is a top priority for you and for this administration, how can you possibly back a plan that would take away coverage and increase costs for people struggling with addiction?” she asked.

“That’s not the plan,” Price responded. “The plan is to make certain that all Americans have access to the highest quality coverage, including coverage that covers substance abuse and addiction.”

— U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin this week submitted the names of two district attorneys for President Trump to consider as he appoints a new U.S. attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin.

The two nominations for the post, previously held by John Vaudreuil, are Republican Scott Chester Blader, the DA of Waushara County; and Democrat Gerald Roger Fox, the DA of Jackson County.

The senators wrote that either of them “would make an outstanding U.S. Attorney and we are pleased to recommend them to you.”

— An inaugural event looking to bridge Madison and Washington, D.C. last week Wednesday gave the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce the chance to emphasize the state capital’s evolving strengths and petition for continued support for research.

At the chamber event, called “DC Meets Madison,” members met with U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, and Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, as well as other lawmakers, and discussed trends of the Madison economy, including the risks to come “if we aren’t able to maximize our opportunities,” according to Zach Brandon, chamber president.

The chamber also made the case for maintaining funding of the National Institutes of Health, as well as the Small Business Innovation Research grant program. These grants play an important role in Madison’s business ecosystem, helping to turn bright ideas into viable companies with money from the federal government.

The reception drew more than 250 people to the courtyard of the Rayburn House Office Building in the nation’s capital. Among those present company representatives with ties to the region, including American Family, CUNA Mutual, MG&E, The Firm, Bendyworks, Arch Virtual, Alliant Energy, WPS Health — just to name a few.

Also at the reception were four other members of the Wisconsin congressional delegation: U.S. Reps. Mike Gallagher, R-Green Bay, Glenn Grothman, R-Glenbeulah, Mark Pocan, D-Town of Vermont, and Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls.

— U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner has a new bill that prevents states from collecting sales taxes from businesses who have no physical presence in their state.

The bill also prevents states from regulating businesses outside of their borders, though they can tell those businesses that they need to comply with national standards. Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls, says states are “growing increasingly aggressive in imposing regulatory burdens on out-of-state businesses.”

Sensenbrenner said those practices “prohibit economic growth, stunt hiring and make it harder for businesses to expand” and that his bill would alleviate those burdens.

— Sensenbrenner also introduced a bill to re-authorize a law that funds education programs in prisons, jails and juvenile facilities.

Former President George W. Bush signed the Second Chance Act into law in 2008, giving grants to organizations to develop programs centering on drug treatment, job training, housing and education. Sensenbrenner said more than 100,000 people have benefited from those programs.

He said ensuring that funding continues “will help prisoners who have paid their debt to society get back on the right path and become successful, contributing members of their communities.”
