Walker Signs Occupational Licensing Reforms Backed by AFP Into Law
MADISON, WI – Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin is commending Governor Scott Walker for signing two measures into law today, SB 108 and SB 109, that eliminate burdensome licensing requirements for Wisconsinites seeking work as cosmetologists and barbers. AFP-WI had strongly supported both measures in the legislature as key to helping Wisconsinites enter these professions.
“Citizens hoping to work as cosmetologists and barbers or to one day own their own salon face steep barriers in Wisconsin,” said Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin State Director Eric Bott. “On behalf of AFP-Wisconsin’s base of 130,000 activists, we commend Governor Walker for signing this bill into law and helping Wisconsinites pursue their version of the American Dream.”
A recent study by the Institute for Justice highlighted Wisconsin’s cosmetology licensing requirements as particularly deserving of reform. The study noted that individuals hoping to obtain a cosmetology license must first pay $391 in fees, complete 1550 hours of educational requirements, and pass two exams to obtain a government permission slip to work.
